Welcome to Mary G. Porter Traditional School!
ELEMENTARY ROBOTICS
The Porter Robotics teams continued their year of success at Saturday's PWCS First Lego League Competition.  One week after 1 of our middle school teams won the county Roboticon tournament, the Elementary teams got their chance to show their skills.  All Porter teams took 1st or 2nd place in major event categories.  11 Elementary teams competed in the Battlefield High School competition.  Teams took part in the FLL Smart Move Challenge tournament, Robot Skills, Robot Design Interview, Research Project Presentation, Teamwork, and various other competitions.  The day was highlighted by the "A" team taking 2nd place in the overall competition (Glenkirk ES took 1st).  Had this been an "official" FLL competition, the "A" team would have qualified for the state FLL tournament.  Just knowing they were good enough to qualify is a high honor and accomplishment.  5 more robotics trophies now reside at Porter.  Here are the event results:

Team A - 2nd Place Overall Competition, 2nd Place in Robot Skills
Team B - 2nd Place in Research
Team C - 2nd Place in Teamwork
Team D - 1st Place in T-Shirt Design

Members competing in this competition were:
Team A - Kyle Mergler, Nicholas Pumpelly, Malia Haskovec, Isaiah Onna, Trey Dawkins
Team B - Eugene Lee, Cole Delinski, Joe Oria, Nicholas Alexander, Chandler Vaughn
Team C - Anna Kohler, Brendan McDermott, Ryan Bolton, Trey Barfield, Zach Frazier
Team D - Jeremy Iber, Llywellyn Means, JD Ramey, Lewis Bass, Brady Bolton, Matthew Van Horn

PORTER TEAM 1486A WINS PWCS ROBOTICON

On Saturday, 4 Porter robotics teams competed in the 48-team PWCS Roboticon.  Teams began competition at 8:00AM and concluded at 4:00PM.  Teams competed in the VEX Clean Sweep Tournament, Robot Skills Competition, Robot Programming Challenge, and the presentation of an Engineering Notebook.  After the day long event, Team 1486A emerged as the winners of the Excellence Award.  This award is given to the overall team champion and guarantees them a spot in the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, TX next month.   This award is the highest honor given at a robotics event.   Team members included Zach Deweese, Brian Martens, Joseph Andrews, Sayed Khan, and Tommy Lee.

The judges mentioned that out of all the teams, ALL Porter students/teams were some of the most professional, courteous, organized, and well-prepared at this event.  What was equally great to see was how the other Porter teams took pride in this win.  The entire Porter delegation, students and parents, celebrated this accomplishment together. This was treated not just as a team win, but a school win.  Many long hours were put in by all robotics students and they all can take pride in what they did all season long and how it played out at Roboticon.

The VEX Robotics World Championships will take place April 22nd-24th in Dallas, TX.  To follow our preparation and the actual trip, please visit our newly created page dedicated to this team.  You may also click on the "For Students" link and click the 2010 VEX World Championship link.

HIGH SCHOOL SPECIALTY PROGRAM TRANSPORTATION
Attention 8th Grade Students and Parents:

Please read the attached letter regarding high school specialty program transportation.  Letters were sent home this week and another copy is available for viewing online.

SPECIALTY PROGRAM TRANSPORTATION

TRAFFIC PROCEDURES

Dear Mary G. Porter Traditional School Families,

For your child's safety we will be continuing to follow these car line & parking lot procedures:

  • The school parking lot will be closed for all student drop off and pick up. We do not want the students walking in the street where there is heavy traffic from the busses and car line.  This also enables staff to quickly expedite the car line.
  • ALL parents will be directed to get in the car line for both pick-up and drop-off.
  • All cars will be directed to wait in the car line.

If you are coming to school to VOLUNTEER…please drop your student off IN THE CAR LINE and then you may go park and walk in.

If you are coming to school to CHAPERONE a field trip… please drop your student off IN THE CAR LINE and then you may go park and walk in.

We truly appreciate your assistance and patience in keeping our students safe.
